ELECTRIC WIZARD / WARHORSE / LOST GOAT
March 20, 2001 - Covered Wagon Saloon, San Francisco, CA

review by: Roberto Martinelli

Unfortunately, I only caught the final minutes of Lost Goat.  The three members of Warhorse took the stage and began their set. The least musical band of the night, Warhorse's style concentrates on the drone side of the genre of stoner doom. (And I thought Electric Wizard was the heaviest band in the stoner universe.) Hearing the band once, you wouldn't remember what individual songs sound like, but that wouldn't be the point, really.
Warhorse

The three men played on as if entranced. The corpulent drummer, his long hair now soaked, looked like some sort of giant, swaying weeping willow, as he flailed away in a constantly slow and deliberate fashion. Every hit from the man was pointedly hard. The tunings were so low that the bass, which usually sits at the bottom in metal, dominated over the guitar.
Psychadelic swaying

While it never became boring, Warhorse's set never reached a high level of interest. Again, perhaps that was the band's intention. While there weren't any riffs that stood out, the goal of playing hard hitting drone was achieved. It was now midnight and Electric Wizard was just taking the stage. The band that I had expected would be hands down the heaviest of the night turned out to be downright rockin' next to Warhorse. Despite being less numbingly crushing, Electric Wizard showed why they were indeed headlining with a set of catchy, but still heavy and psychadelic stoner doom.
Electric Wizard lay down the grooves

Where Warhorse's vibe was somewhat cold and depressive, Electric Wizard's gave you a satisfyingly fuzzy, while not happy, feeling. Amongst the songs that the band played was their 20-minute piece "Chrono.Naut", the title track from their new album Dopethrone, and "Behemoth", from their Come My Fanatics… album. Despite the fact that it was getting late, the three men from England presented the audience with an enjoyable session of soothingly heavy tunes.
