Listening to Dopethrone is like being dragged
through thick sludge in space. On this, their latest album, Electric Wizard
have stuck to their formula and produced another piece of numbingly heavy
stoner doom with ample psychadelia.
Compared to their last release, the double CD Come
My Fanatics…, Dopethrone's riffs and lyrics are less
blatantly ripped off from old Black Sabbath, but at the same time are
less catchy. This album concentrates more on being mind-altering sound
rather than a collection of songs to listen to.
While this three-man English band have always been
about mixing wandering psychadelia in with their blues-influenced drone,
Dopethrone sees Electric Wizard take this to a higher level, with
even longer other-wordly musical forays that stretch into the 20-minute
mark. While the split with Orange Goblin featured the 20-minute track
"Chrono.naut," that piece had more of a jam session feel, while
the songs on Dopethrone have more of an ambient one. Overall, I
like Come My Fanatics… more, but I believe that you'll definitely
be happy with Dopethrone if you dug that one.
